The full form of TOEFL exam is Test of English as a Foreign Language exam.
When it comes to study abroad opportunities and testing English for non native speaker, TOEFL is a popular exam conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service) – a private non-profit organization. Its tests the English speaking, reading, writing and listening capability of the test taker in a classroom ambiance.
Acceptance of TOEFL score
The TOEFL score is presently accepted by 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries.
In English speaking countries the TOEFL score is accepted for college/university admission. Also, professional agencies accept the TOEFL score as proof to the applicant’s candidature. TOEFL score is also being increasingly accepted by immigration departments (Australian visa, U.K. visa) to issue residential and work visas. Medical and licensing agencies use the TOEFL score for certification purpose.
In U.S., the TOEFL score is accepted by 2400+ institutes. 1069 B-Schools now accept TOEFL score for MBA admission.
From taking the TOEFL test, the corresponding score is valid for the next two years.
Format of the exam
There are two formats of the TOEFL exam:
a) TOEFL iBT:
This is the online version of TOEFL exam conducted more than 50 times in a year to test writing, reading, speaking and listening capability of applicants. The TOEFL iBT is an Internet based test introduced in the year 2005. Since inception of TOEFL iBT exam, the computer based exam has been stopped.
b) TOEFL PBT:
This is the paper version of TOEFL exam conducted only in locations where TOEFL iBT exam is not possible. It judges the reading, listening, grammar and writing skills of the TOEFL test taker.

The total time duration of TOEFL exam is 4 hours.

The TOEFL exam can be taken up more than once. However, there should be a gap of 12-days from your previous TOEFL exam registration date.

TOEFL exam fees
The fees for TOEFL exam depends on the test location. Prices of the TOEFL iBT vary in each country ranging from $160 to $240. For Indian test location, the exam fee is $170 (Rs, 12, 000 – approx).The fees for paper-based TOEFL exam is $160.
TOEFL exam history
The history of TOEFL goes as far as 1962 when a national council made up of representatives of 30 government and private organizations was formed to tackle the problem of ensuring English language proficiency among non-English speakers wishing to pursue academic programs in the United States universities. TOEFL was originally developed at the Center for Applied Linguistics under the direction of Standford University applied linguistics professor Dr. Charles A Ferguson.
In 1964, TOEFL was administered by the Modern Language Association financed by grants from the Ford Foundation and Danforth Foundation. In 1965, The College Board and ETS jointly assumed the responsibility for the continuation of the TOEFL testing program. In the year 1973, a cooperative arrangement was made between The College Board, ETS and Graduate Record Examinations to run the program. Under the guidance of TOEFL board, ETS was to administer the exam.
The present statistics shows that the TOEFL exam is taken up by 30 million people worldwide. The test is conducted in 4500 test locations across 165 countries.

The sum of the above four sections makes the total TOEFL exam score in a scale of 0 -120. TOEFL scores are available online within 10 days from the TOEFL test date. ETS sends the TOEFL score of candidates to their preferred institutes (up to 4) free of cost. Printed scores are sent to TOEFL candidates in 13 – days (approx).
Both human scoring and machine scoring is levied on TOEFL exam for accuracy.

TOEFL Junior Tests
ETS also conducts TOEFL Junior tests intended to examine the English proficiency of mid school level students of age group 11 years (approx).
