GMAT Verbal Section 

The verbal section of GMAT exam is computer adaptive part that forms an integral part of the four sections of the exam. It comes as the third section during the tenure of GMAT exam.

This section includes 36 questions and a time limit of 65 minutes. A candidate’s standard of the English reading and writing skills are evaluated.

The verbal section of GMAT section comprises three types of questions:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Critical Reasoning
  • Sentence Correction

Sentence correction

Here, a part of the sentence is underlined and five answer options are given to choose from. English grammar such as nouns, subject-verb agreement, pronouns, modifiers, verb tense, parallel construction, prepositions, etc. is checked. Candidates must be able to recognise and correct the wrong phrases in the given sentences.

The aim of the students in the sentence correction questions is to produce the best sentence, as per meaning, grammar and style of English.

Critical Reasoning
To judge the logical reasoning capability of students, GMAT includes critical reasoning questions in the verbal section. The topics and situations covered in the Critical Reasoning section are varied in nature and may include situation based questions as well. Experts comment, that a thorough reading of 30-second for each Critical Reasoning question is required to correctly crack the questions.

Critical Reasoning involves:

  • Constructing an Argument
  • Evaluating an Argument
  • Formulating a Plan of Action
  • Evaluating the Plan of Action

Sample question for Critical Reasoning of GMAT exam:

Reading Comprehension (RC)

A passage is given along with a questionnaire and candidates have to answer the questions based on that passage. These passages are based on subjects like biological science, political science and business subjects (marketing, economics, human resource management, etc). Furthermore, these passages are 350 words long and through this, a test-takers’ ability to comprehend words, sentences, and draw conclusions, is decided.

Passages of the Reading Comprehension usually falls under 6 subheads:

  1. Find The Core Idea
  2. Supporting Facts
  3. Conclusions/Inferences
  4. Analogy
  5. Logical Framing
  6. Tone

When the passage of RC section is long, its presented to the GMAT test takers in a split screen format where on the left hand is the passage and the on the right hand are questions, appearing one at a time.

Tips for Verbal Section of GMAT exam

a)  Know how each of the CR, RC and sentence correction questions is going to come in the GMAT exam. It’s important to know the format of GMAT verbal exam as it helps to save time and solve fast.

b)  For RC section, allot time in hand that allows you to read each of the passage once thoroughly.

c)  Use the flashcard method to improve your vocabulary or stock of words, as it helps to improve your score in GMAT Verbal section.

d)  Use test materials, books and online resources to practice the GMAT verbal section. Also, get your work corrected by professionals or GMAT trainers.

e)  Start preparing for the GMAT Verbal section at least a month prior to the exam date.

f). For scoring a good score in the English language, one needs to prepare the verbal section of the GMAT exam in advance and academic English. Preparing for this particular section of GMAT exam requires time, effort and patience.
