The full form of CAT is Common Admission Test.
Conducted by the IIMs, CAT is the selection test for admission in twenty Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for post graduate courses. More than 100 management institutes in India consider the CAT score when it comes to post graduate admission process. CAT exam score is also considered by eminent B-Schools of the nation for admission purpose.
Every year, one of the IIMs conduct the national level CAT exam for students in rotational basis.
In 2016, 1.95 lakhs students appeared for the CAT exam.
The CAT exam is conducted across 138 locations.
The CAT score is considered for admission in Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) courses.

The CAT exam pattern changes every year and is announced by the IIMs officially.
The CAT is an online computer based test (CBT). The online CBT version of CAT exam started in 2009.
The total number of questions in CAT exam is 100. The questions of CAT exam are both objective and descriptive type.
Since 2015, the CAT exam is managed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
The CAT exam is conducted in a single day but in two sessions.

There are three sections in the CAT exam, each allotted a total time span of 1 hour.
The CAT exam results are usually declared in the month of January. The IIMs provide the CAT exam score online and does not send in physical mark sheets. In the online version of CAT score released by IIT students can see overall and section wise scaled scores along with percentiles. From the official website (https://cdn.digialm.com//EForms/configuredHtml/756/5055/login.html) , students can download their CAT exam result and take as many print outs they want.
To check the CAT results online, the student ID and password for the IIM official website is a must.
The CAT score card contains the following:
CAT Registration number / User ID
Candidate’s name
Candidate’s category
Candidate’s Date of birth (DOB) and Gender
Date and time of CAT examination
Candidate’s contact details and email id
Scaled Score of Section 1 (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension)
Percentile of Section 1 (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension)
Scaled Score of Section 2 (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning)

Instructions for post CAT Result 2016 activities
In 2016, 20 applicants secured 100% marks in CAT exam. These 20 were male examinees and engineers by profession.
Also, the CAT exam involves two scores: raw score and scaled score.
Candidates are marked +4 for every right answer and -1 for every wrong answer. Like this, the total score that is calculated in CAT exam is called CAT Raw Score.
The raw score is then assessed on a common scale/metric and this process is called equating. After equating, the interpreted final score is called CAT Scaled Score.
The total score of CAT exam is 360.

There is negative marking in CAT exam. For each wrong answer, there is negative marking of -1. Descriptive questions of CAT exam do not have negative marking.
There is no marks deduction for unanswered question in CAT exam.
For every right answer in CAT exam, a student secures 3 or 4 marks.
The CAT score is valid for the next one year only. Candidates can use the CAT exam score for admission in the next year only.
Candidates who get the sectional cut-offs set by IIMs in CAT exam are later called for Group discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI), also conducted by the IIMs. This is the last step in IIM admission procedure.
The total time duration of CAT exam is 3 hours. The exam has three sections namely Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. For each section of CAT exam, a total time span of one hour is allotted.
