If you are just starting out on guitar, three essential chords to learn are:

a) E Major: This chord is commonly used in countless songs and is relatively easy to play for beginners. Place your fingers as follows:

i) Place your index finger on the first fret of the third string (G string).
ii) Place your middle finger on the second fret of the fifth string (A string).
iii) Place your ring finger on the second fret of the fourth string (D string).
iv) Strum all six strings, making sure each string rings clearly.

 b) A Major: Another foundational chord, the A major chord is also quite common and straightforward. Here's how to play it:

i) Place your index finger on the second fret of the fourth string (D string).
ii) Place your middle finger on the second fret of the third string (G string).
iii) Place your ring finger on the second fret of the second string (B string).
iv) Strum from the fifth string (A string) down, avoiding the low E string.

c) D Major: This chord introduces a bit of a stretch between fingers but is essential to many songs. Follow these steps to play it:

i) Place your index finger on the second fret of the third string (G string).
ii) Place your middle finger on the second fret of the first string (high E string).
iii) Place your ring finger on the third fret of the second string (B string).
iv) Strum from the fourth string (D string) down, avoiding the low E and A strings.

Practice transitioning smoothly between these chords, as smooth chord changes are crucial for playing songs effectively. Take your time, and don't get discouraged if it feels challenging at first. With practice, your fingers will become more accustomed to the shapes, and your chord changes will become smoother.

Why is it called a riff in a guitar?
Many suggest that the word “riff" is an abbreviation of the word “refrain” which in the musical context is a repeated line or musical phrase that ties a song together. As guitar riffs are repetetive, they are termed as riffs.
