CHAPTER 1 - MOTION (CLASS 9 - CBSE - SCIENCE)

Vilsy Jomon

Motion and Rest

To define motion first, we have to illustrate a reference point.

A reference point or origin is, as the name suggests, a reference for us to verify whether an object is moving or not. As we all know, an object is in motion when it changes its position. Here, we can define that an object is in motion when it changes its position concerning a reference point.

An object is in rest when it is not changing its position concerning the reference point.

Types of motion

There are mainly two types of motion.

1. Circular motion

2. Vibratory motion

Circular motion is when an object moves along a curved path.

Vibratory motion is when an object moves in to and fro motion.

Scalar and Vector Quantities

The physical quantities that are considered only by its magnitude and not by its direction are called Scalar quantities. E.g., Distance, Speed, etc.

The physical quantities that are considered by its magnitude and direction are called Vector quantities. E.g., Velocity, acceleration, etc.
