The Rain forests are known to be found in places receiving more than 230 cms of rainfall and which has a monthly mean temperature of 18C or even higher in the coldest month of the year. They are known to occupy more than 7 % of the earth’s surface and harbour more than 55 per cent of the terrestrial plants and animals of the entire globe. It is known that rain forests are very dense or thick and they receive 200 cms of rainfall annually and the sunlight does not even reach the ground in some of the areas.

The reason why they are also called the evergreen forests is because different trees shed leaves at different times of the year.

Andaman and Nicobar islands, slopes of western ghats, Assam. West Bengal, Odisha are the places where you can find tropical rainforest areas. These areas experience the humid climate and abridged dry season. Rosewood, ebony and mahogany are the trees which are abundant here and the most commercially used.

The biggest waterfall in India is the Kunchikal waterfalls. It is located on the Shimoga - Udupi border of Karnataka. The water that flows down the waterfall is from the river Varahi. It is ranked as the 116th in the world and India highest waterfall. The waterfalls from a height of 455meters, in a cascading manner over the rocky structures. The waterfalls close to the Hulikal Ghati Temple.

The water directly falls into the reservoir of the Mani dam, which greatly cuts down the speed of the flow of water. A hydraulic power plat is also built at the foot of the waterfalls, to generate electricity.

The right time to visit this waterfall is during the rainy season. During this season, the waterfall is surrounded by greenery, and it is a delight to watch the tributaries formed by the Varahi river, as it falls into the waterfall.

From Gujrat to Arunachal Pradesh there is a time lag of two hours, but watches show the same time because the standard meridian of India (82'30E) is passing through Mirzapur in UP. That time is considered as the standard time of India.

The wind that is from the south region and south-east Asia that blows from the month of May to September, which brings rain can be called as monsoon rain. It is a seasonal shift that brings torrential showers and heavy thunderstorms.

Break monsoon is the absence of rains during the period of monsoon. As in the monsoon trough shifts closer to the foothills of himalayas, which inturn leads to a sharp decrease in rainfall over majority parts of India.

It is no doubt that receding monsoon brings abnormal changes in precipitation which in turn affects the farming and also the farmers.

In layman’s terms, it is

a dry spell during the months of monsoon. It is also to be known that sudden bursts of rainy periods also occur and we all know the reason for it. Global warming.
