It is difficult to determine the exact number of words in any language, including French and English, as languages constantly evolve and new words are added while others become obsolete. Additionally, different sources may provide different estimates.

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) included over 600,000 English words, including technical terms, obsolete words, and regional variations. However, the average active vocabulary of a native English speaker is estimated to be around 20,000 to 35,000 words.

Regarding the French language, it is also challenging to provide an exact count. The French language has a rich history and has influenced and been influenced by various cultures and languages. The number of words in French is estimated to be around 100,000 to 200,000, including different word forms and variations.

It's important to note that word counts alone do not necessarily indicate the expressive capacity or richness of a language. Vocabulary size, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances all contribute to a language's depth and complexity.

There are about six times more words in the English language than in French. As of 2021 the Complete Oxford Dictionary has 600,000 unique words against 100,000 words (totalling 350,000 meanings) for the Grand Robert (the most complete French dictionary).
