Getting your Idioms right

Idioms is a collection of words -used to express something. But the only catch here is that the words are not literal.

There are endless idioms in English language and can't be covered in just one lesson. But surely through this lesson you will understand the importance of Idioms and can explore more through formal learning.

I am going to talk about a few simple and basic idioms that any beginner can use in their day to day language. As you start to understand and practice these, you can go on to more advanced idioms which not only make a language interesting but also fun to speak.

Lets begin with the very first one-

1) A piece of cake- No i am not talking about the cakes you get at the bakery shop or cut on the birthdays, a piece of cake as an idiom means, "something very easy". You may wonder how to use it.

Well you can simply say, " speaking English is piece of cake for me". That means anything you are good at can be expressed by this idiom. Lets take another example- suppose you are good at swimming, then to tell someone that you know swimming very well you will say, " swimming is a piece of cake for me".

Lets understand the second idiom-

2) Chicken hearted- Someone who get scared very easily is referred to as chicken hearted. So if any of your friend is ever feeling scared of darkness or feeling intimidated by some task, you can say to them, "don't be chicken hearted". Can you think of anyone you know who is chicken hearted?

the third idiom is-

3) Out of the blue- When you meet someone suddenly, or when anything occurs unplanned, we use this idiom. For example your friend came to visit you unplanned, that is, you were not expecting them, then you would say, " Ram came to see me out of the blue". Another example  for this, if you decided to watch a movie suddenly with your family and your friend gets annoyed that you did not invite them, then you will say, " we decided to go for the movie out of the blue". That means you did not plan it beforehand.

The fourth idiom is very interesting-

4) Raining cats and dogs- If it is raining heavily, this idiom comes in handy. To communicate that there is heavy downpour outside you will say, "it is raining cats and dogs outside".

The last idiom of this lesson is-

4) Apple pie order- When everything is very organised we can refer to it by apple pie order. Foe example, if anyone you know or you yourself like to keep your house in a very organised manner, you will say, " my house is always in apple pie order". Not very difficult, is it?

I am sure you will have fun practicing and speaking these idioms with your friends. Don't just stop here, there are countless idioms in English, pick up your favourite and start using them. Good Luck

Till next lesson, keep learning, keep growing.

Best wises.
